This week, in the UAE specifically, something happened that is worth pausing over.
The UAE Ministry of Education sent a high-level official delegation to the World Digital Education Conference in China, under a pivotal banner: “AI + Education: Transformation, Development, Governance”.
This is not a courtesy appearance. It is a serious search for AI-powered education models that prepare students for the future labour market.
What is happening in Saudi Arabia: historic numbers
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the largest experiment in integrating AI into education at the regional level is underway:
6 million students in Saudi public schools began the 2025–2026 academic year with mandatory AI lessons.
And the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) did not stop at schools — it launched mandatory AI curricula for all Saudi universities, across every discipline — not just computing and engineering, but medicine, business, and the humanities too.
14 Saudi universities signed partnership agreements to develop AI competencies among students and academics.
The UAE: a university 100% dedicated to AI
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) — the world’s first university entirely specialised in AI — is expanding its programmes in 2026 with new specialisations including robotics and quantum computing.
The university developed “Jais” — a large language model for the Arabic language — used by the UAE government in its administrative functions.
OpenAI reaches the Arab region
In May 2026, OpenAI launched its new education newsletter and revealed that the “Education for Countries” programme has reached more than a million students in Jordan alone.
The gap that should worry every education leader
Amid all this positive news, there is one number that should worry every leader in the education sector:
Only 19% of educational institutions worldwide actually teach AI skills.
While 100% of the labour market will soon demand them.
The gap is wide. And the race is on.

Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE are setting the standards and redefining education in the age of AI.

6 ملايين طالب في المدارس الحكومية السعودية بدأوا العام الدراسي 2025-2026 بدروس إلزامية في الذكاء الاصطناعي.
وهيئة البيانات والذكاء الاصطناعي (SDAIA) لم تتوقف عند المدارس — بل أطلقت مناهج AI إلزامية لجميع الجامعات السعودية، لكل التخصصات — ليس فقط الحاسوب والهندسة، بل الطب والأعمال والإنسانيات أيضاً.

جامعة محمد بن زايد للذكاء الاصطناعي (MBZUAI) — أول جامعة في العالم متخصصة كلياً في الذكاء الاصطناعي — توسّع برامجها في 2026 بتخصصات جديدة تشمل الروبوتيكا والحوسبة الكمية.
الجامعة طوّرت “جيس” — نموذج لغوي كبير للغة العربية — تستخدمه الحكومة الإماراتية في وظائفها الإدارية.
OpenAI تصل للمنطقة العربية
في مايو 2026، أطلقت OpenAI نشرتها التعليمية الجديدة وكشفت أن برنامج “Education for Countries” وصل إلى أكثر من مليون طالب في الأردن وحده.
الفجوة التي يجب أن تُقلق كل مسؤول تعليمي
